The TCS230 and TCS3200 are programmable colour sensor devices that use an array of photodiodes to detect the intensity of different colours of light. The sensors provide selectable red, green, blue and clear photodiode filters, allowing a microcontroller to measure the colour characteristics of an object or light source.

Instead of providing a simple analog voltage output, the sensor converts the detected light intensity into a frequency output. A microcontroller can measure this frequency and use the readings from the different colour filters to determine the relative colour of an object.

The module is commonly used in colour sorting systems, object identification, robotics, RGB colour detection, automatic lighting systems and educational electronics projects. TCS230 and TCS3200 modules are very similar in operation and are offered here as selectable product variants.
